I love the tone and longevity of D'Addario's XS strings, but wanted a customized set that would maintain more tension when dropping down to DADGAD or other alternate tunings, so I used D'Addario's Players Choice option to create a signature set of strings tailored for my style. This set is esentially a "true medium" gauge, using the 3rd, 4th, and 5th strings from a regular light gauge set and the 1st, 2nd, and 6th strings—the three that are tuned down in DADGAD—from a medium gauge set in order to keep the tension relatively similar to a light gauge set in standard tuning.

This Custom set is a variation of the Signature set above that's been balanced for CGCGCD tuning. It starts with a set of Medium gauge XS and swaps out the 3rd string (which is the only string that doesn't change from standard tuning) and the 2nd string (which gets raised a half step from standard tuning's B to C) with strings from a Light gauge set.

This is the set I use on guitars that I leave in standard tuning—but they also work well for my other tunings (DADGAD, CGDGAD, CGCGCD, etc.) if I don't have one of the custom sets above on hand.

Martin's Retro series strings have a unique look and sound, and are naturally corrosion-resistant so they last a long time. They sound especially nice on mahogany guitars like my 000-15SM. The Laurence Juber Signature set is a "true medium" gauge (similar to the JT Signature XS set above) that works perfectly for DADGAD.
